The Story Behind the Print
Nine Sixteenths grew out of my habit of getting lost in the small details of old trucks—the hidden places where time settles in and leaves its mark. I found this old truck in a field in central New England and focused tightly on its side panel, where layers of peeling paint in teal, red, and oxidized rust have built up into their own kind of landscape.
Years of sun, rain, and relentless work have shaped the surface into something textured and deeply painterly. The faded yellow cursive script and the stenciled “9/16” add a subtle human touch, acting like a quiet whisper from whoever last used the vehicle, marking it for a job that’s long since been finished.
The Rhythm of Daily Work
Old trucks have always carried a certain weight for me. In small towns, they are far more than mere machines; they are part of the active rhythm of daily life. They haul, they break down, they get patched together with improvised repairs, and they keep going.
Even when they are finally retired from the road, they hold onto the stories of the people who relied on them. You can see that history written directly in the shallow dents, the chipped paint layers, and the weathered steel. There is a deep honesty in that wear—a tangible record of hard work done quietly and without fanfare.
A Composition Shaped by Time
Ultimately, this piece is an exploration of the overlooked beauty found in decay, showing how a worn surface can tell a larger story of endurance and transformation. Capturing the scene at this scale lets every fine crack, flaking edge, and subtle shift in color stand out. Up close, the industrial panel breaks away from its mechanical origins and becomes almost abstract—a complex composition shaped not by human intention, but by time itself.
