The Story Behind the Print
Captured on the shores of Mayflower Beach, this photograph represents a defining milestone in my work. Standing on the open sand, I was immediately drawn to the weathered dune fence stretching across the horizon, where the wind had carved soft, delicate ripples into the landscape. The brilliant coastal light threw long, clean shadows that perfectly repeated the exact visual rhythm of the wooden slats. By choosing a warm, subtle monochrome tone, the entire scene settles into a pure study of texture and line, capturing a distinct maritime atmosphere that honors the slow, patient pace of Cape Cod.
There is a compelling tension here between structure and impermanence. The wooden fence attempts to maintain its straight, rigid line, but the massive sand dune is always shifting underneath, forcing the slanting posts into an elegant, sweeping lean. The expansive 4x10 panoramic format allows this vast horizontal pull to open up completely, inviting the viewer's eye to naturally follow the fence line and sink into the meditative cadence of the shadows. It is a quiet, simple moment from a familiar coastline, but it carries a profound sense of calmness and structural order that remains long after the heavy view camera gear is packed away.
The Panoramic Process
This expansive composition was captured on a single sheet of 4x10-inch film using a traditional large-format wooden panoramic view camera, ensuring the sweeping landscape unfolds as a continuous, uninterrupted thought. Working with a dedicated panoramic camera guarantees absolute physical honesty out in the field; there is no digital stitching, no complex blending, and no risk of parallax distortion or mismatched edges. The resulting large-scale negative holds an extraordinary level of microscopic clarity and deep tonal depth, preserving the fine texture of individual sand grains and the weathered fibers of the wood. Printed as an archival pigment print, it delivers a tactile, cohesive piece of craftsmanship that cannot be replicated on a digital screen.
