The Story Behind the Print

I’ve always had a soft spot for old books. This image is a quiet reflection from that pull. It’s my way of sitting with the fading presence of physical books in a world that keeps drifting toward digital offerings.

For this piece, I gathered a group of vintage books with worn covers, softened corners, and bindings that have clearly lived through years of handling. I arranged them so their age shows, letting the frayed edges, exposed stitching, and weathered wood speak for themselves. Against a deep black background, those textures take on a kind of quiet gravity, inviting you to lean in and notice the tactile qualities we rarely think about anymore.

A Narrative on Transition

As I worked with these books, I kept coming back to the idea of change—how something once so central to daily life can slowly slip out of view. The slight lean in the stack isn’t accidental. It hints at that slow, inevitable shift away from traditional storytelling. The way the volumes rest against one another feels like a small, gentle collapse, as if they’re settling into a new reality. It’s not meant to be dramatic or mournful, just honest.

Through this work, I convey a subtle but powerful narrative about change and loss. The stacked volumes symbolize a society where the tangible, printed word is gradually displaced. Rather than lamenting this transition, I invite reflection on the enduring physicality and history embedded in these objects, emphasizing our lasting human connection to books amid broader cultural shifts.

The image was created using a high-resolution digital back paired with a modern view camera, combining traditional photographic craftsmanship with contemporary precision. This approach highlights the tactile details and subtle textures of the worn and abused surfaces, capturing both the physical presence and emotional qualities ingrained through its altered appearance.
