The Story Behind the Print

This image comes from my collection of vintage matchbooks that I gathered from mid‑20th‑century American businesses. Each matchbook offers a small window into an era shaped by bold graphics and spirited typography, carrying advertisements for hotels, bars, restaurants, and countless local spots that once defined the rhythm of everyday life.

Their worn surfaces, scuffed edges, softened colors, and the occasional crease speak to years of being handled, pocketed, and passed along. Some sit fully closed, while others rest slightly open creating a layered narrative of everyday objects that once held cultural significance. Together, they form a kind of visual mosaic that captures the everyday life of that era.

Composition & Palette

I arranged the matchbooks tightly so they overlap and build layers of texture and movement. The composition invites you to slow down, look closer, and notice the tiny stories tucked into these small, disposable objects. A lively palette of reds, blues, yellows, and greens animates the composition.

These matchbooks are small works of art in their own right. Beyond simple documentation, the piece carries a warm nostalgia for a time when design, community, and personal connection were woven into even the most ordinary objects. Matchbooks were never meant to last. They were designed to be used up, tossed out, forgotten. The fact that these fragile little pieces of paper survived at all gives them an unexpected weight, a kind of quiet resilience that adds to their charm.

The work honors the individuality of each matchbook, many now rare or entirely lost to time while capturing the broader spirit of an era when printed ephemera held personal stories. Layered together, the matchbooks form a vibrant, tactile memory of American social life, inviting viewers to linger with the histories tucked into these small, colorful remnants.
